They are reporting on the BBC News website that pubs / restaurants in England will have to close at 10:00 p.m. and are to be "table service" only.

I cannot for the life of me see what benefit that will have in slowing the virus. I would have thought if we are going back to the good old days of the "tipping out time" and mobs on the streets, it would have been more dangerous.
It looks to me like they are trying to put a sticking plaster over a gunshot wound. As you say, Saundra, a lot of people simply won't listen and won't care.

They are working a balancing act until a vaccene is available. With over 100 in production and 5 already producing the required antibodies and T cells, it is pretty certain that we will get one even if it is in Jan 21.

Everything else is just a holding action.

There are two ways that this can end. First is that some 30% of the world population gets it and then it becomes a seasonal thing like flu. Second is that we develop a vaccine and we kill it before it mutates too far like flu.

We have come to terms with flu and it is highly likely that over 2bn people already carry some immunity to it.

In the winter of 99/2000, there were 48,000 excess winter deaths attributed to the flu. It was nasty and I know as I had it and had a temp over 104.6 and was in bed for 3 days (extremely unusual for me).

So, considering all above, there is no action the government can take to stop this outside of totally shutting the country and travel down for two months. Then, as we have seen in NZ and OZ, it will simply come back.

What are you left with? People want some categorical resolution and don't want to solve it themselves. Outside of a vaccine, there is no answer.

Eventually people will decouple from the government and just get on with their lives. Hopefully the vaccene will get there first, but it is not a strong hope.

The only difference I can think of is that there some night clubs are opening as bars and staying open until 4am, as they would in normal times, so it’s cutting six hours off their opening hours meaning less drinking time and shorter indoor contact.

I think thats it Jo and youngsters dont actually go out until 10pm they drink at home first, get drunk and then go out. So hopefully it might stop that. As you say clubs are open until the early hours, hot sweaty venues, drunk silly youngsters, covid central!!!!

I also think it will make a huge difference to the pressure on the emergency services at weekends, basically I'm all for it, why do pubs need to stay open all night?

I have a few different groups of friends I go out with usually once a week on a Tuesday. We meet at 7.30 by 9.30 we are usually the last in the restaurants anyway, so that makes sense too.

Johnson isn't coming out of this very well. He's allowed himself to be pushed around by "experts" and the media, who are determined to rubbish everything the government has done - even if it is what they said should be done the previous week!
Yes, infections are going up, but we are doing 230,000+ tests a day now - of course you are going to find more covid infections!
But the death rate is very low now. In March we were getting 5,000 cases a day and sometimes 900+ deaths.
Now we are finding 4,000 cases a day and circa 20 deaths.
I have no doubt the scientists advising the government are giving what they consider best advice but there are other scientist like the Oxford University Prof Carl Hennigan of Evidence based medicine who has been rather more accurate then the government wallahs and says that they are wrong again.
And I tend to believe him, not them.

Sweden is only fifth in the European table of deaths per 100,000 and they haven't locked down at all.
If you had listened to the more hysterical elements of the press and academia you could be forgiven for thinking that everybody in Sweden was going to be dead by now! But it didn't happen.

We initially locked down to "protect the NHS", in itself a novel concept as they are supposed to protect us!
Well, if the NHS isn't ready for a second wave then that is down to them. They have had time to prepare for one.

Treatment of covid is now better. Death rates are lower. There is evidence that any second wave isn't going to be as bad as the first wave.
I think we have reason to be cautiously optimistic.

Hear hear MM. I like a drink as much as the next man but all night boozing should not be allowed imo.
