Vic, VV uses the older http (protocol) rather than https. It's not such a big deal, it is just that your password details are not encrypted and you are not on a secured connection, and it is only a message board after all. If it was a shopping, banking, financial site, say, and you were giving out sensitive information such as bank card details then it would matter.
Most up to date browsers of all types will give you a warning that a site is "Not Secure" either via a pop-up or a padlock icon in the address bar. Open padlock = not secure, closed padlock = secure. Some might use an exclamation mark in a warning triangle to let you know the site is not secure.
