It is worth £20 per week and for many it is a life saver.
It is true that there are some who abuse the system, they have always been there and always will be, but many of those now on UC are new claimants, victims of Covid job losses. The majority of them will have been in low skill and low paid jobs so probably did not have much, if anything, put away for a rainy day. Many will also have been furloughed for some time so were getting 80% of not much. They genuinely do need help in a time of crisis.
These are people who could never have worked from home and it will be to them that the government looks for workers when parts of the economy such as hospitality, leisure, shops and so on open up again to get things moving. A little help now will pay dividends later on.
