Just as a postscript, 2 telephone calls to their Helpline yielded no joy, so I went on their Webchat this morning. They admitted there's been a glitch in their system over email confirmations, now rectified, and also confirmed our form had been filed. I've printed out a screen grab of the conversation for posterity, and I'll happily now leave it at that.

I received a little card thing in the post a few weeks back telling me to look out for a letter asking me to complete the census..... but nothing received as yet. Then I happened to hear on the radio today that you don't have to wait for the letter but you can simply go online?

Who got a letter and who simply went online?

I don't think you'll be able to complete the census online unless you've received a letter to your house giving you a 16 character access code, Meriad, or you've requested one.
Anyway, the census website is here:
https://census.gov.uk/

Interestingly, one of my old work colleagues tells me that he actually received a hard-copy census form and a reply envelope along with his access code letter, without him requesting the former. We don't know why this happened, it's certainly not the norm .....

We had the card Ria and the letter came perhaps five days later.

I’ve not done ours yet, I’m putting it off. I hate filling things out like this and having read Ossie’s post I had a realisation that my parents won’t be able to complete it online so I’ve just requested a paper one for them, otherwise I’d just be handed the code and asked “I don’t know what we’re going to do with this....”.
