You might want to read the wiki page on Yanukovych's presidency.

I remember a lot of it but even more was never reported in the press.

Lies on lies on lies With Russia the puppet master.

Now we are to believe the alternative are far right.

Well they called Farage that. It, also, was a lie.

Hichens has never hidden his dislike for both Bush presidencies and the USA so it is no surprise that his 'analysis' is a bit simplistic: to say the least.

Since it became an independent country in 1991 Ukraine has been riven by political infighting, failed parliaments, an attempted coup, an attempted presidential impeachment and civil unrest - almost war. It has rarely been a country at peace with itself.

And yes, Viktor Yanukovych is worth a look. It was he who pushed for closer ties with Russia.

Also he is a native of the Donbas region, a Russian speaker first and drove the recognition of Russian as one of a range of additional languages. He vetoed parliament decisions too when they didn't meet his ideology. Not, mind you, what he had campaigned on, those decisions fit his statements closely. His real ideology.

It feels like a mini Yugoslavia. Or the Alsace between France and Germany. Which, with what you mentioned about Kruschev and his decisions on land borders, seems a bit more apt.

It also feels like trying to deal with Northern Ireland with the population split very closely on any decision.

None of this, of course, mitigates Putin's actions. But it has provided a few weak excuses.

I have just been comparing still photos versus videos from Ukraine.

The video shots seem to show natural light, the sort of thing you would see if you looked out of the window. The still shots are much darker, using bichrome effects, as photographers would say - a mix of sepia and dark yellow ochre - for dramatic effect.

It is not necessary. We know terrible things are going on and we do not need these photos digitised in any way. The originals tell the whole story, the do not need embellishing to tug our heart strings.

If the horror of war is not already totally evident, then no amount of "polishing the horror" will get through.
