It feels like a mini Yugoslavia. Or the Alsace between France and Germany. Which, with what you mentioned about Kruschev and his decisions on land borders, seems a bit more apt.
It also feels like trying to deal with Northern Ireland with the population split very closely on any decision.
None of this, of course, mitigates Putin's actions. But it has provided a few weak excuses.
