In general if the air temperature outside is 32 °C when indoors it is 24 °C then opening the windows will make the house warmer.

However, opening one window at one side of the house and one on the other, and keeping doors between them open, will create an air flow - a draught. Science says that an increase in speed will cause a drop in pressure and this will also cause a drop in temperature (combined gas laws). It is how fans work.

Keeping blinds and curtains part closed work well, especially on the sunny side. We all know that sitting next to a sunny window makes us boiling hot. Blinds etc. being good insulators, stop the sun's rays and some of the heat.

Go to any hot country and all the windows have at least nets or blinds.

Absolutely right Frank. I have my patio doors shut, one of the long curtains on it drawn, and the fan on - it's lovely and cool. Mine and Mick's bedroom is double aspect, so I have both windows open to create a through draft - it really helps.

We always have a window open a little, with the shutters shut too.

The only time I shut all the windows is when it's about 45C, then it's just rather warm air blowing through. It's only for a few hours and I put the fan on then.

We have a series of windows and doors open on 3 of the 4 sides of the house, and yes, we are getting a reasonable through draft. All the blinds are closed, and some of the curtains.

We do leave the windows open overnight, but I find we can get a lot of wee buglets going up the walls and round the lampshades ......

I think the thing that concerns me most is the fridge freezer. It's not in direct sunlight, it does have all the "clearances", but it is backing onto a south facing wall. This bungalow is too small to be able to re-position it elsewhere easily.
The rating gives an optimum high working temperature of 35C, and it did start vibrating badly in the last heatwave. All we can do is keep the kitchen well ventilated.

I track internal and external temps. When Mrs S opens the doors the temp goes UP. When they are closed again at night, the house is oppressive. That "breeze" during the day is simply not worth it. Right now it's 38C outside. We can do without that inside.

A lot of houses on the continent have exterior shutters on the windows, which keeps the heat out.
Anyhow we are here in Ruswarp near Whitby after a stressful drive up the A1 - never, ever seen it so busy.
The temperature is 6 or 7 degrees lower than Wakefield, absolute bliss!

I’ve just been in a queue in Aldi, another till was opened and the woman in front of me told me to go ahead of her to the new till. I said she should go first seeing as she was in front but she said she was in no hurry, she was enjoying the air conditioning
