Going Missing

Postby cruiser2 » 27 Nov 2022, 10:41

My landline stopped working on Thursday evening. I only have it for incoming calls and free calls at the week-end.
I am with Virgin. An engineer came out on Friday about 12.30 p.m and did some work saying the landlinemwould come back on about 15 minutes after he left.
As it had not come on at 4.00 p.m I phoned Virgin again and I was told an engineer would be coming today.

My contract finishes in early December. They want to double the monthly charge. I have tried to negogiate a reduced monthly payment. But I have difficulty
understanding what they are saying.
So I may not renew the contract and will be without a broadband connection for a few weeks. I think Ria & Kaz have my email if anybody wants to contact me.
I will also transfer my mobile phone to a different system.
I keep telling the operators I speak to at Virgin that I am 88 years old and not very good technically. But they seem to think I have a degree in computer technology
and can understand their poor pronunciation.
Will kep in touch maybe at the local library

Cruiser, could you not go into a shop of another phone provider and chat with a proper human and maybe change provider altogether? We have our landline and broadband with Eir, an Irish provider, and a few months decided to change our mobiles from Vodafone and bundle them in with our landline package, saving €100 a month. We went to an Eir shop and it got sorted easily. Also, we had landline and therefore broadband problems recently, and when I tried to phone, I was facing a wait of 30+ minutes to talk to anyone. Then I discovered that Eir has a dedicated phone number for over 60s, and from then on, they were great, it took over a week to sort but we got updates and what we felt was personal service. Too many companies don’t take on the fact that us older people need a more personal touch.

It's difficult, isn't it Cruiser, and I do sympathise.

Saundra, yes, I'm dreading what the BT monthly bill will be from next March ... :|

Good advice from Osc.

Go and speak to the 10 year old lookalike in the shop and they can hopefully sort you out :)

Cruiser, before your broadband expires and before you change your mobile provider please have a look around.

This site is a good place to start for broadband. Forget the Black Friday stuff but do have a read through the other links. You might also Google for "Broadband deals for OAPs" to get more results. If you sign up with a new provider (and get their router) a few days before your existing contract runs out the move is seamless - no loss of connection. However, please note that some 'ordinary' deals can be as good as OAP 'specials'. Just about everyone is offering 50+ Mbps with unlimited download deals for about £25 per month. It is more than enough for us old gimmers. ;)

For mobile I can recommend https://www.1pmobile.com/ Scroll down to the 1-Year Deals and have a look at Talker. If, like me, you are not a big data user (always on the Internet or streaming films, music or YouTube) then it is fantastic. It is part of EE so you get brilliant coverage. I moved there two months ago - one bill, once a year and off you go. New SIM arrived in two days and it took a day to port my old number. A simple text message was all it took.

WM, Thank you for your reply. I am going to look into both your suggestions.

Like you say us old uns dont need ultra fast broadband. I went with Virgin because it was a good deal. But trying to negogiate a new contract is terrible
May finish up with Sky so I have more TV channels.
