I've never liked Charles

And now I've read about his Coronation I like him even less.
A concentration on the NHS and refugees? Oh my days.
He's Hereward the woke, on steroids.
And looking at Earthshot William, the rot has obviously set in.
I expect support for Republicanism to start rising shortly.

As a Republican my feeling is that we have entered a period of uncertainty.

Over the past decade support for the monarchy has dropped from 73% to 62%, yet support for republicanism has stayed roughly the same at 22%.

This is down to a few things. When the Queen died so did the debate to a certain extent. Any criticism of the monarchy was said to be an attack on the Queen even though that was not the case. It got so bad that a lot of republicans self-censored so that they would not be attacked - verbally or otherwise. Then there was the over-promotion of Harry's scribbles for days on end, which served to bolster the monarchy. It was Harry V The Royals, and the ginger whinger is not popular. And, of course, we now have the incessant fawning over William and Kate and Camilla and Charles by the media.

The Queen, quite rightly, was much admired, and not just in the UK, but Charles is a different kettle of fish. It is why the media tend to focus in on W & K with only the odd and rare "good news" stories for Charles.

I do not think that I will see a UK Republic in my time, but the snowball is rolling.

He's a good man. I know people who have met or worked with him, and he really cares. He can be a bit short-tempered, but mostly he's affable and keen to help people, and has done a lot behind the scenes.

If we dispensed with the Monarchy what would we have in its place. Would it be a Head of State voted in by Members of Parliament or even the Government of the day. Would it be someone who has donated to a particular Party or even someone who is an ex-member of a particular Party who may have lost his seat, something like we have at present when people are despatched to the House of Lords. Would we even end up with someone whose main interest was to feather his own nest and take advantage of the position. The Queen is a hard act to follow but I think Charles has made a good start despite the trials and tribulations which have dogged him over the last twelve months or so. I hope he manages not to interfere in politics as that is not his role, but I think he is on the right path by wanting to include everybody and represent the whole Nation. He has shown his generosity at a very early stage by handing back millions to the taxpayer from the profits he has made on his wind farms. Hopefully he will become a very caring King.
