At least you are prepared Weka.

It is going to play havoc with already saturated land, do the neighbours have a mutual support system set up??

Stay safe.

It’s 3am and I’ve not yet slept. The cyclone has stalled over great barrier island which is just east of me. Our garage is leaking through the roof of the room above the garage, so that’s going to be fun to find the source. Cathedral ceiling, so it will probably mean jib off. Did i mention that we have a shortage of Jib? So it won’t be a quick repair.

So far that’s the only damage at our place. We still have power, somehow. My friends also can’t sleep so we’ve been sending messages back and forth all night. They are all safe as well, we’ll the awake ones at least.

How the oak tree behind me is still standing, I’m not sure. It’s not got much ground to cling on too and has all of its summer leaves.

Cyclone should start tracking across the country in the next hour or 2 days

I’ve been watching the situation in Auckland as one of my best friends lives there. Got this from her last night:

“Hi Rosie, we, on the eastern side of Auckland are ok and also I’m on a hill, but the west coast has had many slips with houses taking off down the slopes. Nessa’s (her daughter) town of Whangarei up north is badly flooded but her house is up on a hill too so they are ok. However she has grave fears for their cabin on the land where it was exposed to extreme high winds. Roads are all closed due to slips, or have been washed away so Nessa can’t drive there to check.”

Needless to say I was very relieved that they are all safe, and that you are also, Weka.

Checking in

Postby Weka » 14 Feb 2023, 10:35

We are doing ok. Kids go back to school tomorrow. No major damage here, just the leak in the roof to sort out in a couple of days. I’ve been extremely lucky as I’m in a small valley bordered on 3 sides with hills and by a park on the east with lots of large trees which have acted as a shelter belt. The gale force winds have worked there way around all the compass points over the last few days. The wind here at home has been awful and at times I’ve wondered how windows haven’t blown out and how is the roof still on, but nothing like what it is up on the ridge line.

My friend who lives just the other side of the ridge facing south (15 mins walk away) came around for a couple of hours today to get some respite from the wind. it’s absolutely hammering her house. It’s Tuesday night and we have had red alerts for wind and rain since Sunday. 140mls fell last night. Thankfully things are starting to calm down now.
So much destruction upon destruction after each storm this summer (5th in the last 5 weeks), it’s going to be years before this is all cleaned up. So many roads washed out, landslides, trees down, power outages, flood and wind damaged houses, land/buildings falling into the sea…

Here’s a map of the current power outages. The big green jut out on the right is the east cape. That is totally cut off, no power/phone/internet and all roads in/out blocked or flooded so thats why they aren’t on this map as it’s “not reported by house”
