Sheep watching

We had "our" sheep on the field for the last week and they're fascinating to watch.

Yes, they do have their regular walks - you can see where they go, as the ground is worn away and yes, they do follow each other

They wander around all night - we can hear the bells - but when it starts getting hot, they move to the shade of the battery store. All of them, huddled together. You'd have thought they'd be hot

Yesterday, they did that, but one of them, right by the wall, obviously wanted to move, so she tapped the one in front of her on the back, with her front hoof and it moved, to let her out

Then another one will move and those two or three will go and lie under a tree, in the shade.

When it rains, they just stop, where ever they are and just stand there, not moving, for ages.

Bonkers, but fun to watch.

A friend of mine has a 2nd home up in Scotland (very rural) and she also often comments on her sheep watching.... love it!

Have seen large flocks in the Lake Distict and Scotland. They all seem to follow a setpattern eating the grass as they go across a field.

It is not the same when you are counting them trying to get to sleep.

I didn't have a car when I was posted to RAF Leeming in 1976 so had to get the bus up the A1 and then walk down the lane to camp, about a mile and a bit.

It was a hot day so I stopped for a rest against a field gate with sheep in it. All I said was "It's a nice day for chomping on grass" when the next thing I know is that there were about 30 or so sheep all in an arc near the gate looking at me.

"You could do with some shade, and I hope the farmer is getting you plenty of water" went the chat, and on and on so much so that I didn't hear the car pull up....

"Ahem! If you want a lift to camp you will have to say goodbye to your girlfriends..."

This talk of sheep reminds me of when I convinced the kids that the sheep grazing on a very steep escarpment by the roadside were specially bred with shorter legs on one side, so they didn't roll down the hill into the road They believed me for ages

When Bill had his cataract surgery last year we stayed overnight in a cottage miles from anywhere and driving to his appointment the following morning we came across a lamb down a lane which had escaped from a field. We drove past and then looked at each other and had both decided that we couldn’t leave it so stopped the car and there began 10 minutes of us trying to herd this lamb back into it’s field.
