Car Insurances

sigh - really hate the hassle of having to renew every year.

My current policy with LV was increasing from £390 to £580 - so the annual run around of various websites proceeded; it really just becomes a right pain in the proverbial to have to do this every year. Thing with most of the comparison sites is that the insurances that come up cheap I've never heard of and I just don't know if I'd trust them or not. Anyway long story short - ended up with the AA coming in at £480 - still higher than I'd have liked, but at least less than the LV renewal

sigh

I blame 'spurts and the media for this.

I renewed at the end of May at only a few pounds more than last year.

Then in July the media was saying that premiums would rise at up to 50%. No reasons were given just that costs would rise above inflation... and guess what! And just before the new registrations come in as well: coincidence?

When I was looking round given this news all I kept finding was that the "AVERAGE" cost would be £657. I took that as a clue that this would be the number where insurers (most of them) would aim their range of policies at. It's psychological warefare.

It is the same with the energy price cap and what the AVERAGE household will pay. Made up numbers.

Ria, your quote from LV was spot on what the media was predicting.

I always renew mid way between the new registration dates of Sept 1 to Mar 1 to Sept 1. Most new cars are registered and insured on those dates and people tend to roll over their policies year on year. Good times to raise prices, eh?

I use this site and go to my choices by phone for the best deal. I find that direct contact can often get a cheaper quote than comparison sites.

Master O was groaning in July that his car insurance renewal was around £450, up £100 on the previous year, so I was a bit concerned what mine would be this month.

£251, up £2 on last year!

Household insurance - we have been with Barclays for years. It crept up to £517 p.a. around 2019 - but the following year reduced and has come down, year on year, ever since.
Barclays have now exited the insurance market and handed their policies over to Aviva. The latest renewal was just £324. 8-)
It did make me wonder how much I'd been "ripped-off" in the past, though ....

Who is your car insurance with Ossie? That's a very good price!

Frank, you're spot on with the media hyping things up  . I'll have a better look at the link you sent. Unfortunately I'm one of the many that's stuck with renewal date; I got my car beginning September 2015 so my insurance is always due for renewal on 9th September. And unless I didn't read things properly, most insurances will only quote 30 days before renewal date, not before? And I don't think I can cancel a few months in without incurring a penalty? Something to look into maybe.

Also needs to be added that I've taken all the add-on's that come with the insurance - protected no claim bonus, legal, courtesy car option, breakdown cover etc... so that also adds up

I have just renewed my car insurance. It is with LV. It has gone up from £870 to just over £1200 Have shopped around. but could not get a cheaper deal.
One company wanted over £4000.
And I have dash cams front and back.

It is a rip off. The companies are just chaging what they like. They are working from a set piece and do not take into account personal circumstances.
If you are over seventy load the premium. Yet young drivers are the ones who seem to drive fast and ignore speed limits and other traffic laws.

Ria, there are basically two ways to move a renewal date. One is to declare a SORN and take the car off the road for a short time. This is only available if you can do without the car for a while. The other is to take out a short term - 90 days - policy and then use its end date as the new annual renewal. That is how I moved mine to the end of May.

It's with Ageas, Meriad, but it's through a broker. Fully comp but low mileage, no extras and full no claims discount. I pay half as much again to the AA, but I did need to use them a while back, so can't grumble.
