Does anyone know what they are anymore?

I want a 2.4m x 2.4m one for the bed to keep the duvet in place.

I don't want a throw or a runner, whatever they are, I want a counterpane, or a bedspread, or an over blanket, if you are not posh like what I am.

I managed to find one in Dunelm, but it's miles away. And the cost!

Everybody had one when I was a kid. They hid the manky eiderdown we all took out and used in winter.

Had some wonderful candlwick bedspread in the old days and my grandma had counterpanes full of down and feathers
And pot hotwater bottles or a brick wrapped in a

And yes she cooked on a coal range with a brass tap for got water
Kept chicken and had a boiler in the shed where st grandad light on a Monday morning to do the washing and an mangled to get the water out of the clothes
They lived in horncastle nr Lincoln all there lives

I think we all had one back in the day WM, my Mother had a beautiful satin one, we had the candlewick variety.

You can still get bedspreads at a very reasonable price £10-£12 on Amazon. GC Gaveno Cavailia do a range.

Saundra, our couterpanes / bedspreads were quilts made by mun and grandma from other stuff.

We had a coal fired York range and back boiler in the living / dining room for cooking and it kept the whole house warm.

My job was to turn the mangle on the Hoover washer while mum put the 'dry' stuff in the sink ready for the washing line. We then got a Hotpoint twin tub with spinner and I was made redundant - had to do homework from school instead.

Those were the days, eh?

Like Jen said loads on Amazon maybe making a comeback or a smart name for a fleece I brought my first Hoover twin tub washer from the naafi in raf laarbruck in 1965 now there is a memory WM

We had a washing machine with a wringer on the top, bit like this one linked below, until the early 80s when we got our first automatic one.

I well remember sitting on the floor watching the automatic for the first time
I also remember a few years later when we got a microwave and Peg from three doors away came around to see it and sat on a dining chair in front of it, watching a sponge pudding cook

I’ve still got my Sharp radio cassette player which was my Christmas present in 1985.

Went to Boundary Mill yesterday. I was looking at bedding as I wanted another white King sized sheet. Got one in the sale for £13.00 I am sure they had throw overs
as they seemed to have lots of different bedding.

I just have the duvet. Not posh and there is only me going into the bedroom.

I have been down Leeds market and picked up a quilted cotton thing - 235 cm x 235 cm - for £25. It falls nicely down both sides of the bed and from top to bottom so it will do this winter.

I feel that a run to the charity shop is now on the cards - sheets, pillow cases, pillow protectors, duvet covers.... When and why I got all this stuff is a mystery.

Same with shirts, T-shirs, trousers, shoes, suits, ties, belts. I never wear any of them. They can go as well.

I have a favourite selection of smart-casual stuff I rotate all the time. I need nothing else.
