South Africa withdraws from UN refugee convention

Postby cromwell » 22 Nov 2023, 10:47

South Africa is temporarily withdrawing from UN conventions on refugees.

This is because they have a huge problem with people entering SA from other countries. Story here:-

So much for "Our international obligations" as our politicians have it.

Tensions in the country are high, as is unemployment. Some hospitals have had black South Africans standing outside them demanding proof that patients are South Africans before they will let them enter.

Proof that the refugee and asylum laws are in need of an overhaul? The South African government thinks so.

Crommers, very sadly SA is going down the drain at a rapid pace of knots.... it's quite sad really because it is such a beautiful country and most of the people are just amazing. But; Zimbabwe and many other countries close by are even worse and think SA will be the land of milk and honey so they'll risk everything to get there - only to find it's probably worse for them there than it was at home (wherever that may be) The violence between the various tribes etc over there is quite something else.

I'm just beyond pleased that my brother and his wife are finally leaving there.

They are moving to Germany; my brother is already there - he started a job about 2 months ago. His wife has remained in SA to sell the house / sort things etc and will be coming over January / February next year. Their two daughters are both in Europe, one in Amsterdam (with her husband and two children) and the other will be moving down to where the parents will be.

I hope they find somewhere warm and welcoming Ria.

I have heard bits of stuff about SA; power outages, deteriorating railways, taxi wars and so on; but I didn't know things were so bad as you describe.

Ria, my best wishes to all your relations leaving SA. I hope that they will be be welcomed wherever they relocate.

As for the DM. it is comparing apples and horse chestnuts, It is trying to equate a totally different situation to what we have in the UK. It is trying to support the government's (Illegal) Rwanda policy.

Look at the SA figures for migrants and tell me how the UK could cope. There are times when International treaties need revisiting, SA has a case, the UK doesn't, not quite yet
