It should have made no difference as the leak was before your meter - a general leak - and the meter almost always measures usage within the building / property, not the land, but it depends where the meter is. Most are in the home.

We have a water meter, had no choice with it being a new build.

Our total spend since November 2022 is £453. That’s four adults, lots of showers, washing machine used almost daily but I have cut back on how often the dishwasher is run. I used to run it daily but can get away with every other day. Can’t cut back any further on what we use.

It is a legal requirement that all properties built after 1990 have a water meter of some sort, and they have to be read annually. The readings can be automatic (new meters) or by a visit (old meters), but they still ger read.

Homes without a meter, pre 1990, are charged on a rateable value set by the Local Valuation Office or an assessed volume based on size of property and number of inhabitants or a flat rate set by the water company.

If you don't have meter then it can't be at the end of your drive. I think you and Saundra are confusing meters with main Stop Cocks / Taps. Meters are usually housed on or in the property though in some cases can be at the boundary. Stop Taps are usually away from the property, on the path or thereabouts

Jo, you like all the other millions of us, will not be able to save the £500 Ofwat claim. It's a fictitious figure made up on a spreadsheet, just like all those other "averages" the media throws at us.

Wm I most certainly am not my meter is by the pavement edge because a few years ago because of a faulty reading it had to be replaced by Yorkshire water my stop tap was also replaced it's under the sink due to a leak I also have a gadget on the wall to switch water of I class myself as an elderly plumbers mate

Saundra, apologies. I did read that YW do have some meters and stop cocks in chambers under or by the pavement. It was their approach when the meter rules came in during April 1990.

When it became mandatory to have a meter, they installed them in our road, at the end of the drives. Ours is there, unused but should we ever move house whoever moves in will have to use it, as you said.

So, I take it your home is pre 1990, and you opted to keep to the old rating / occupants sysytem when the new meters were installed and never chaned.

Your water bill is your issue, but I do know that it could be a lot less with a bit of tweaking.
