Last week the BBC did a piece on GM wheat designed to give off a smell to deter greenfly.
Monsanto produced soya beans resistant to its weedkiller, Roundup.
It all sounds fine and dandy, but.....
The Monsanto soya beans were planted and Roundup was sprayed to kill the weeds, This was done year upon year. Then, one day the weeds survived. More Roundup was used and still the weeds survived. It got to the point where the weeds took over and in parts of the US the soya harvest bombed.
Monsanto forgot about evolution, but the weeds didn't - one problem solved created another.
The wheat might work, but will the greenfly play ball or will they evolve? And if they do evolve what will be the results for the wheat and other crops?
