Partial Memory loss

My laptop (on Windows 7) has suddenly decided it doesn't want to be helpful.

Previously, when I went to sign in to a regularly-used website, when I clicked on the box to enter my 'name',
it always came up with a list of my usual names, for me to select the right one, and then it would automatically
fill it the correct password for that site. It has now decided not to do this. I am not pleased.

Does anyone know why this has happened, and know how to restore this feature?

I have tried doing a System Restore but this hasn't made any difference.

This sometimes happens when a browser updates itself, so, assuming that you have not wiped them when clearing history or cookies you could try either or both of these:

Simply unzip them and run the .exe file.

If they find nothing you might have to do them all over (assuming you can remember them all) then save the name/password pair to a text file or password keeper for easy recovery.

My Norton is configured to "remove" certain browser data after a time period.

Not sure what MSE does??

Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well, but I do have a little black book with all my
'names' and passwords in, but to keep referring to it seems a waste of time, and it is
much more convenient to have them added automatically.

Incidently, strangely enough the problem doesn't arise when logging in to Vocal Voices,
as in that case it works perfectly as before.

When I do fill in the details manually, the annoying thing is that the computer now doesn't
remember them the next time I log on. What I need is some way of re-awakening the facility.

Having just read your second post, I should add that I recently downloaded AVG Anti-virus, but
deleted it after a couple of days, as I didn't like it. Could that have caused the problem?

Yes John, installing and then removing AVG could have altered your settings.

Go to Control Panel and open Credential Manager. In there you should find a list of logins for various places. You could try editing them or deleting them. If you delete one the next time you visit the site you should get the pop-up asking for your username and password at which time you should tick the box telling Windows to "Remember my password".

If you are using the category view, it's in User Accounts and Family safety.

I'm seeing my Windows passwords there but not my Web one's. That's usually Autocomplete in IE. Tools->Internet Options->Content. Click on the Autocomplete settings button. Make sure Usernames and passwords are checked.

John, the password on VV is managed by the phgBB site and is stored in a (hopefully secure), cookie for the next time you connect to the site. It's not an IE password function.

Hmmm. I am using a Firefox clone and have blocked all cookies from V V in an attempt to stop the intermittent page transition delay problem. I have now cleared everything and done the same with IE... so it is saving the login details, sans cookie, somewhere.

John, I have scoured the internet for answers and it appears that most people have given up and cleared everything out and started again.

To do that:

Tools>>>Internet Options>>>Content tab>>>AutoComplete, Settings button>>>Make sure everything that can be is ticked.>>>Delete AutoComplete history button>>>Make sure everything is ticked>>>Delete button.

Once done, click your way back out and restart IE.

Warning: you will have to input all your username/password pairs again as you visit sites.

I don't know of any other autologin method which doesn't use software on your local machine. My guess would be that FF didn't do what it said.....

Frank is right. Resetting the browser is one of those PITA things you need to do from time to time. I'd guess it was to do with the issues you had with Babylon.

You can do this in IE by going to Tools-Internet Options->Advanced and clicking on the reset button. Make sure you check the Delete Personal Settings checkbox too.

That should do it. For the other browsers I have to google it as I never use them enough to break them in this way. If they don't work I just go back to IE. Except I have had to delve into seriously advanced stuff with Firefox for a work app which would not work with IE later than 8...... You don't want to do that
