Nobody who signs into power the laws of the land is politically neutral. It's impossible.

Whatever we choose to delude ourselves with.

A president would be aligned with a political party... A marriage made in hell compared to what we have.

The Monarch does not have to sign off laws, it is symbolic and a courtesy.

Another thing about a President. There are many different types of Presidency, from pure figureheads to the all-powerful, or not, American version: we are free to choose. As we already have a Prime Minister as political leader it is likely that we would go for a figurehead.

Actually NOT true. The courts are the courts of HM the Queen. Not the government. If any law is to be upheld by the courts of the land, they must be approved by the owner of those courts.

That is NOT a courtesy, that is a fact.

Not true.

The Monarch has three choices:

1. Royal Assent. It is always given. No problem.
2. Royal Assent, reserve powers. This is where the Monarch refuses assent for an undisclosed period of time. To do so would foment a constitutional crisis, probably resulting in the abolition of the Monarchy as a political entity.
3. Royal Assent refused. This would definitely result in the abolition of the Monarchy.

The Monarch will always give assent, making it symbolic and a courtesy, to do otherwise would see the end of the Monarchy.

The Duchies of Cornwall, Gloucester, Lancaster and York, part of the Act of Settlement, could be removed tomorrow by a bill of Parliament of the Commons. It is called evolution.

We are not subjects of the Monarch, but citizens of the country. The Monarch is effectively a subject of the common man.

HM Courts and laws are not the courts and laws of the Monarch, they are courts and laws of the State of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

The Crown = the State.

The Monarch cannot levy taxes, raise an army or go to war. If the cousins fall out the Monarch cannot declare war on Luxembourg, but the State - the Crown - could.

So..We have a Prime Minister with presidential powers who is politically biased and is not elected by the people and a Monarch with no authority. What could be more democratic than that?....er.... no need to think too hard. :(

Abolish Parliament; it's a bad joke anyway.
We need an absolute monarch. My back's giving me a bit of gyp at the moment otherwise I would put my name forward.
So as an alternative may I offer:-
1. Prince Harry; this would kill off gingerism.
2. Boris Johnson (King Boris... it has a ring about it)
3. Jeff Thomson, the ex-Australian fast bowler. We might need a bit of new blood so why not an Aussie?

No, no, No!.

The word 'Monarch' does the same to me as 'EU' does to you Europhobes.
I will suggest a benign dictator.
After careful consideration and a little input from Mr Carlsberg I offer:
1. Our very own Ossie.
2. Peter Hitchens.
3. Jane Moore (in her Grumpy old Women persona).

Yes, I think I'd join the OsParty!
There can be such a thing as a benevolent dictator.
Dr Salazar who ruled Portugal until I think the late 60's or early 70's, was found on his death to own his house, a bit of furniture and two suits; and that was about it.
Proof that some people aren't in it for themselves.

Personally, I think that if the Queen refused to give her consent over, say, Britain staying in the EU,
she would get overwhelming support from the people, and Government would have to take notice.

In fact, the only criticism I have of the Queen is that she has not expressed her disapproval of the
way in which politicians in recent years have debased her country.

Democracy just isn't working now.

Before we went on our last cruise, mrs.e went to have aromatherapy. She had been complaining about a pain in her neck. While she was on the couch, the lady doing the aromatherapy was massaging her back and neck. There was a click and the pain has gone and has not returned. mrs.e says it it well worth the expense.
