Black Forest Trifle

Postby Diflower » 13 Dec 2012, 09:38

This was first posted by Doris on dm a good few years ago; I've made it every Christmas since :)
It's at its best in a big glass dish but is fine in a china one. It needs to hold 3 pints.

6 double chocolate chip muffins, OR 1 chocolate loaf cake (McVities)
Few tablespoons cherry brandy/cassis/rum/whatever
1 large pot (500ml) ready made custard (should be fresh but long-life works fine)
1 large pot (500ml) double cream
1 jar (390g) Bonne Maman cherry compote OR same amount tin cherry pie filling
Plain chocolate to grate on top

In a large bowl, whip cream to soft peaks, and save 1/4 in a separate bowl.
Add custard to cream and fold in lightly - no need to fully mix.
Slice muffins/cake and put some in base of serving bowl.
Sprinkle with liqueur.
Next add some cherries, then a layer of custard/cream mix.
Repeat layers till you run out, then top with reserved cream and grated chocolate.

Also a plus Kaz is that it's layered so you don't have to dig right down to the bottom to get a bit of everything :)
I know Doris made it without booze as there were young children, so you could use something else. I never have, the boys have always loved it as it is :)

Oh my goodness....I want some NOW!!! :D

Thanks so much for that Di, I'll definitely be making this - it sounds so quick and easy too, you don't want to be faffing around with anything fiddly when there's so much more prep to do, do you!

Yes Ally I make it the day before so long as there's room in the fridge :)

It is quick and easy Jo, you just have to pay attention - that bit about 'save 1/4 of the cream separately' for instance, has caught me out before. But that was when the recipe had so many cherry stains I couldn't read it properly

Forgot to put, it's meant to serve 10-12, that's about right, it comes out a lot bigger than I'd expected :)

LOL Di
I did something like that last year. My friend lives on Orkney and sends me Orkney tablet every Christmas and birthday. Anyway, last Christmas she sent me extra plus the recipe for the fudge cheesecake made with the tablet. Each tablet is made up of 16 squares so I read to blend 12 squares with the cream cheese and cream. "Ooooh", I thought "12 for the cheesecake, 4 for the cook" and promptly ate them. Did a couple more steps and then came to the bit where I had to crumble the remaining 4 squares and mix in with the cream for the topping....
I wouldnt mind but I'd read the recipe through before starting
