My husband has never worked in childrens services, much less child protection, so he wouldn't know.

He worked in Adults with Learning Disabilities and then Older Carer's for Adults with a Learning Disability, trying to get older parents to realise keeping little Johnny at home now he is 50 and you are 70, isn't the best for either. Most of the time the cared for ended up as the carers for their parents with dementia.

He now works in a large psychiatric hospital in the adolescent unit. His caseload is 9 girls between 14-18 with extreme mental health issues, half of which wouldn't be there if they had been taken away from their parents at an early age, so we come full circle really, sadly

He loved that job and he was so good at it. He arranged Carer's Forums and a monthly meet up and they all loved him and were so grateful.

Shell, your posts show the other side, the side we never see, but that is because people who are doing their very best is not newsworthy. They also show how difficult the job is - nothing is as black and white as some would make out.

My ex is in the same line of work as Tim, and I have two SW mates who work with old people, and I trust every one of them to do their jobs as best they can without question, but nonetheless, there are those who fail to meet the standards.

Unfortunately, and I say this with sadness, those who do fail are given a sort of protection their actions do not deserve. This has to change.

You know , I hold back and I hold back on these slag off the social worker posts but they really hack me off.

Walk a mile in my kids shoes. Yes, there are bad social workers but the vast majority are good. But they all get tainted with the same brush because it's so much more interesting to slag them off.

The only reason my eldest has reached 13 is because of a very vigilant social worker. She was lucky to reach 3.

My youngest was lucky to be born and taken into care. The next child wasn't so lucky. Social services weren't so quick - their parents managed to kill their 3 day old brother as they managed to outsmart SS by not going to hospital and having the child at home and mistreating him so badly he didn't stand a chance.

And you speak about the rights of the parent. I say fuck the parents - when it gets to the point that SS are involved they have no rights. Society have a duty to care for the child - no one else will. If they parent is innocent they will kero their child - but you know the majority they lose their child bloody week deserve to. They just twist the press to make it sound like they shouldn't. There's some bloody good solicitors out there that will say anything to win a case!
