And you speak about the rights of the parent. I say fuck the parents
I totally agree, Deb. Obviously parents must have rights but, at some point, those rights must be curtailed and the child's welfare must take precedence.
Of course SW have made mistakes and some children have been taken into care when they shouldn't have been there. However I strongly believe that the majority of children taken into care should be there.
I have personally seen situations were a child has been left in hell until SW could work through the system before taking a child into care. One case was a child born to two addicts.
They lived in a 2 bedroom house and the only furniture was a double bed. There was no carpets, no cooker, no fridge, no cot,etc because the grant they had been given was spent on drugs. There was rarely any heating. The child's nappy was rarely changed and I know for a fact that sometimes the only way she saw a nappy change was when another addict would see the state the child was in and change her. Sw were involved pretty early on but had to work through the system before they could remove the child to safety whereby it was found that the parents had been letting her suck on the spoon they used to prepare their drugs!
SW hands are tied by the system and, imo, possible jail sentences could make a SW hesitant and would just be another way of curtailing them from acting.
Of course there are bad SW out there but the majority of them do a decent job with little, or no, appreciation.
