A lot of men won't admit it but were taught the basics of knitting at primary school ;)
Hopefully this will sort it out Ally, then you'll be fine :)

Don's really good with sewing jobs or 'fixing' things - he's just painstakingly replaced and sewn on buttons on an old leather jacket that was Con's. :D

It's me that's useless.

BUT - I have a very determined streak that WILL see me master this knitting malarkey.

Ally that's how come I managed in the end, I'd spent all those years saying I missed out on the knitting and sewing gene and just decided enough was enough, I wanted to do it therefore I would  :D

Being a mere male, this is a simple task which I can do. I was taught many years ago by my mother. I managed to knit a scarf and other simple things. Even learnt to purl as well as straight knitting.

If you were nearer I would show you how simpl3e it is.

  I asked mum yesterday if she'd show me how to cast on and she willingly picked up the needles.

I watched her do a wee loop thing then cast on using her thumb - 20 seconds later I was casting on myself! :o

I can't believe how easy it was!

She then (over many laughs) showed me how to purl..which I can now do. :D :D

AND....she reckons I'll be able to tackle cable stitches next.

I'm so pleased. :P :P :D

Blimey Ally - cables are a darn sight harder than knitting and purling!!

But well done for getting there - it IS dead easy!! :D

Oh good.

As a generally cack-handed person mastering even the basics of knitting is a big deal for me.  8-)

I'm already thinking of the next colours of wool I want to be buying.

If you want to do mainly scarves you can get loads of different lovely effects just by using different wools/sizes of needles, and different patterns of rib(2 plain, 2 purl, etc).
Best doing a good few of those first, you'll be ready for cables when your mum comes again :D
