Turnout is said to be between 75% and 80%, 97% of those are in favour of returning to the Russia Federation. The vote is in line with the ethnic make-up of the Crimea. Crimea's parliament has declared the region an independent state, but it is not recognised by the International community because the referendum has been declared null and void. Meanwhile the EU has imposed sanctions on 21 Russian nationals and frozen the assets of some businesses.
Kosovo did not bother with a referendum, it went straight to war. Its ethnic Albanian majority wanted independence and went all-out for it. NATO joined in on the side of what was described by the UN as a Terrorist Organisation, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and bombed Serbia: Belgrade in particular. When the dust had settled and Serbia had been subdued for wanting to keep Kosovo as part of Serbia, Kosovo was recognised as an independent state by 108 members of the UN.
It is good to be consistent.
