Having done an hour's light gardening yesterday, and now aching all over, unable to bend and stiff as a plank, I think I need to exercise more, let alone the kids of today .....

PE was mandatory at my secondary school in the early years 11-13, two periods a week - and house sports were on top of that, at least one, sometimes two afternoons a week. Add in the frowned-upon (it was a rugby school) regular lunchtime soccer sessions, as Cromwell said, and it was a wonder we had time for academics!

At my grammar we had PE (double period) at least twice a week, plus hockey in winter, athletics in summer, basketball in the gym.............and on top of that I played in the tennis club held at lunchtimes sometimes! I also rode my bike to school - maybe that is why at 55, despite being slightly overweight, I can out walk my 18 year old daughter with no trouble at all :?

When I was at elementary school, we had a PT (now PE) class twice a week, plus a half day every week on the sports field.

Then, in the top class, as 13 year olds, every week we learnt the swimming breast stroke lying on our bellies across a chair, followed
by an hour at the local swimming baths. When we could swim the length of the baths we were presented with a certificate. The boys
also has a half day at a woodwork centre.

In spite of all these activities, we still managed to get a good general education that has stood me good throughout my working life.

But it was real education in those days. No computers, no calculators, and strict discipline.
