Yup, that's an Android device which is custom configured for Amazon and tied mainly into Amazon systems. When you burrow down it's Android.
The main difference with the Fire HDX is that it's somewhere between the iPad mini and the iPad in form factor. Anything which makes me put glasses on (besides my Kindle which I suffer for the two week battery life), turns me off.
