Transferring photos from android phone to iphone

Postby Gal » 24 May 2014, 17:22

I am trying to find a way of doing the above - bear in mind the android now has no allowances as I migrated my current number across to the iphone therefore I cannot download anything to the android now :(

Have googled a few things and looks like I have to use the laptop as the 'middle man' - transfer the files from the android to the laptop, then on to itunes and then source from there. I've never transferred anything from android to laptop so when I have come to plugging in the usb lead, I can't find the driver information to say it has read it. Please ber in mind it will be the equivalent of speaking to a five year old about quantum physics when you try to help (if anyone can? ;) )

Thanks x
Gal

Yep, Gal, you have it exactly. Because you have an iPhone, the only gateway to the iPhone is iTunes. So you have to get the pictures off the Android phone.

The very first thing you need to do is enable USB storage mode on the phone. When you connect the phone, it should ask, on the phone if you want to enable USB storage mode. If it does not ask, then slide down the top bar and there should be an entry about USB on it. Select that and enable it. Once it has done this, your computer will see the Android phone as a USB Key and will add it to your devices and to the file management.

I don't know if you have Windows or Mac. With the Mac the phone should appear as an Icon on the desktop which you can then open to get the files. In Windows, you need Windows explorer. Press and hold the Windows key then press E. Or go to Start->All Programs->Accessories-> Windows Explorer. Or it may be a pinned folder on the task bar. (All assuming windows Vista or 7, for XP you need to use the second method and go to Programs instead of All Programs).

In the Explorer you need to expand the tree. Especially the Computer Tree in Vista/Windows7. Under that you will see your C drive, CD/DVD drive and you should see the name of your phone.

Open up the name of the phone and you should see one or two entries. Phone and if you have one Card. When you open the phone or the card, or both, you should have a DCIM folder. That folder is exactly the same as a camera and all your photo's should be in it. Beware if you have a memory card, you may have pictures on both Phone and Card.

Copy the pictures to a folder on your C drive. For this, creating a folder on the desktop would be best. You can do this by right clicking on the desktop and selecting New->Folder

Once you have them in your folder on the desktop, you can then open iTunes, add the folder with the pictures to the photo's section and sync it to the iPhone.

On the Mac the process is similar but you need to use Mac tools.

That should do it.

Ah now there seems to be a problem with the pc (not a mac, it's a Windows 7 Home Premium) linking to the android - the phone is displaying all the 'right' things but there are messages showing on the laptop that the drivers are unable to be installed - I can't remember the exact wording but I have two cables and two spare usb ports - none of which seem to be working :| So I have reached stalemate. Thanks for your help though - I really think I could manage to follow your instructions, if only I had the blimmin thing sorted! :|

Daughter has a mac as well as her own iphone/itunes account.

Would it be simpler to transfer the files using her mac?

It could be Gal.

It all depends on the phone being seen by the Mac. Just remember iTunes limits itself to 2 devices so it will offer to wipe and reinitialise your phone for you if you try to connect it to an iTunes which has more than one device already registered. Nice.....

BTW, even though the drivers failed, did the phone appear on explorer? My old Android phone tries to be a modem as well as USB. USB is seen, modem is not. It may be that you can already see it but the other features failed.

It's always worth double checking.

What's the phone??

Samsung Galaxy Ace, it was showing on my laptop as something different though, can't remember what now, but even the shape on screen didn't look like a phone, more like a modem...I will plug it in again later and make notes ;)

No good using daughter's mac then, she has itunes on it and her iphone, so the two devices are used already :|

Back to square one...

Gal, I think it's two in each device class, iPod, Phone, Tablet. It would not be very good if you couldn't synch all three of the devices you bought for such a premium.

Even then, you could still get the photos off on the Mac and copy them to a USB memory stick and sync them from the PC with that.

Here is the USB troubleshooting page for Samsung phones. If that helps although it does not match my phone, seems to be older software.

One other point. I've been checking my USB settings and I notice that it has two USB modes. Media device and Camera. Your phone should connect as a Media Device, as Camera requires other software.

Thanks Suff but I am mindful of losing all my photos on the Samsung and am really reluctant to have a go at the above on account of this - have plugged the usb cable in today and it seemed to be about to work, then I got an exclamation mark message which said it needed troubleshooting, as before, only this time I got a box which said "You need to format the disc in Drive E before you can use it" and then the option to format or not.

I think I will find someone that can physically transfer the pics as I do not trust myself on this one, even with all your help - many thanks Suff :)

If you want to have a look at them, there are some other options.

I'm just looking at mine as I never go there. I looked at the My Files app. Applications then select the right page and open My files, then went to the images, camera and opened it up. Then I selected all and clicked on the share icon at the top. If offered me a range of options including Bluetooth, email, gmail, picasa etc. However the most interesting one to me is Microsoft OneDrive.

I have OneDrive (previously skydrive) and I've installed it on my phone. You could create a OneDrive account, if you don't have one, then install the onedrive software on the phone. You can then just put the photo's on OneDrive and get them back on your PC. It's an option. I'm sure you can also do this with google's Drive but I can't tell you how as I'm already incensed enough about how much google insists that you log in with a google account just to make the thing work properly.

It's worth a try. This is something you can do yourself and don't need any help.
