Chicken with OK sauce.

Postby Workingman » 17 Aug 2014, 17:45

I remembered this when I saw bottles of OK in the Chinese supermarket. It was a bit of a favourite when I was a lad. The recipe was on the back of the bottle.

Chicken breast cut into cubes
2 Tablespoons of OK sauce
1 Dessertspoon of sweet and hot chilli sauce
Cashew nuts
Selection of chopped vegetables
Noodles or fried rice to serve.

I didn't have any sweet and hot sauce, but I did have some Louisiana pepper sauce and some honey as a substitute, plus the nuts. My selection of veg was mushrooms, diced carrot, spring onions and a few beansprouts. The whole lot was served on a bed of fried cooked noodles done with a splash of soy.

You just cook the chicken in a little hot oil in a wok or pan, add the veggies for a minute or so then add the sauces and the nuts to finish off.

Talk about delicious.

OK sauce is a bit like HP or Daddies; only fruitier, sweeter and a bit more piquant. It is used a lot in Chinese cuisine.

Colmans still make it but it is hard to get hold of.

:D We always had either Daddies or OK sauce in the house as my dad didn't like ketchup :D  I hadn't heard of it for years :)

Dad didn't like ketchup or HP - too bitter - so he always had Daddies, and it was "his"! :o

Us young ones got OK sauce. It was more 'child friendly', being fruitier and sweeter - great for dipping with soft fried eggs. :D
