The inquiry into historical child abuse has lost its second Chairwoman, Fiona Woolf, due to pressure from victims over her acquaintance with Leon Brittan who is due to be interrogated by the inquiry. This follows the earlier resignation of Baroness Butler-Schloss whose brother was Solicitor General at the time the alleged events took place.

The victims view both women as part of "the establishment", the very same establishment they were tasked with investigating. It looks as though Theresa May is going to have to look outside the Westminster bubble for a suitable Chairperson. No bad thing imho.

Let's hope she does Frank.. Far too many cover ups in the establishment, the police, social services .. No saying that whoever gets to head the enquiry will be any better, this country is corrupt and the corrupt always protect the guilty.

This is just a symptom of how dirty politics in the UK has become.
The Tories want a tory chairman in charge of the "maybe" "perhaps" child abuse that "could" "possibly" have happened thirty years ago.
To limit damage to the Tory party if the accusations are accurate.
Labour want a left wing (Michael Mansfield/ Helena Kennedy) chairman in charge of the enquiry, to maximise damage to the Tories in the run u to next years general election.

So what we have is political parties trying to use the alleged sexual abuse of minors as a weapon to score political points. NOT NICE.
The more I look at people like this the more I think a military coup becomes more acceptable.

Now, that's fighting talk. But I'm inclined to agree. Politics has become a dirty word, and is ruining the concept of democracy.

The military do as they are told, rightly or wrongly Aggers.. This country is unrecognisable, we have been "given away"
And are no longer in control of our destiny.

Why do people choose not to exercise their power?

Because they are, in general, more interested in fiddling with smart phones, etc.,watching
overpaid footballers, stuffing themselves with food, consuming alcohol, and/or wallowing in
affluence. They just don't have the time or the desire to think about what the future holds.

In any case, it's probably too late now = the rot has set in.

Well Aggers, speaking personally, I don't own a smart phone or any form of tablet, the non-league footballers I watch aren't (generally) paid, I'm teetotal, and a pensioner watching the monthly budget. The food thing ... well,

I have both the time and the desire to think about changes I'd like to see, but when it comes to the "exercising of power", I have as an individual absolutely no influence in the scheme of things. That irks me intensely, but I suspect the things I'd want to see would probably, let's say, not command a majority view ....

So I think all I can do, sadly, is remain irked.

Aint majority rule a bitch! If the majority don't give a damn, then those who do are overruled by the beneficiaries of that lack of care.

One problem with the "we get what we vote for" stance is that we do not, in many ways, have much of an option. The reality for most of us is that the offer on the ballot paper is usually the same as last time, with a few way out options not worth voting for, and in the vast majority of constituencies the sitting tenant will get to stay.

OK, it could be argued that is the result of tribal or sheeple voting, but it would take a tectonic shift to change these things, and that is not going to happen any time soon. We, the electorate, are not a unified force. We are corralled into our own little groups for a reason - to keep the status quo.

I would like to see every other voter, in every polling station, spoil their ballot paper with NOTA writ large across the candidates' names, but it will never happen.
