Actually it was not a "lie" per se, it was a true rendering of his feelings for a woman who lied to, deceived and misled the parliamentary party she is the leader of and the parliament she is first minister of. Those statements are pretty much fact and validated. Even though she got away with it.
What he did was call her a cow (feelings about the kind of person who would act that way to a colleague and parliament), then apologise for letting his true feelings out instead of keeping them to himself. Because, apparently, we're not supposed to know how our representatives feel. Only hear the party line and a pre sanctified message "passed by the management".
It would have been interesting, today, to find something on social media, via google, with a line to the effect of "with cows like this who needs enemies"....
