There has not been any excuse, not one, for people not knowing that they needed photo ID to vote today. The information has endlessly been in all the papers, radio and TV news channels, and don't forget (un)social media, for weeks, even months. What is more, if you registered to vote you will have got a polling card and the rules and acceptable forms of ID were laid out there in black and white. If you did not have one of the acceptable forms there was also information on how to get a "free" Voter Authority Certificate with just a phone call. People who were too stupid or too lazy to apply do not deserve a vote.
However, I suspect that most of those turned away were "activists" trying to make a point about ID in general. Tough.
And let us not forget that if someone who had not registered to vote but had turned up in attempt to do so they would also have been turned away. How many of them were there?
