It is as I expected on the referendum

Postby Suff » 03 Apr 2016, 22:07

That when they take out the "lethargic generation" who have opted out of voting and self determination, the figures show a 4% lead for exit.

The reason that the SNP came so close to winning in the Scottish referendum, remembering they had some 20% points to make up from the very beginning, was that they energised and motivated the young to vote. Youngsters who had never voted or even thought about voting and they were energised with an idea of a brighter future. It was, in the end, the older and more cautious who closed the lid on the vote and also the reason for the huge backlash after. Because the young remained engaged and voting, some of the older felt massively betrayed and others of the older felt they didn't have to bother any more.

In the EU referendum it's different. The young are the one's who have grown up with the EU and have never known anything else. The young see no "bright future" in the EU and are only being told of tales of woe and misery if they don't stay. The old, however, know that the UK will not dissolve and vanish without the EU, they know of a time when the UK could, not only stand on it's own, but, lead the world.

As has been seen from these poll results, at least half of the young don't care about voting and won't bother to vote even though they think the EU is a place we should stay. The old, on the other hand, will vote and will vote in significant numbers.

Even more importantly the message the SNP clearly stated when they won the UK election seats and are looking likely to make big gains in Hollyrood (Labour may come third to the Tories and the Lib Dems may be decimated), has been ignored. Young Grass Roots, engage them, give them something to wish for and get them out to vote. Nobody is doing this with the EU, these people live on social media and the fight is in the press and on the streets.

This is going to be WAY different from the expectations as they stand today. It could go either way but I expect a lot more negative news to come out in the next two months and that is going to switch the Remain voters off and energise the Leave voters even more.

As I have said many times, that is already happening.

As for the youth, they do see a bright future in the EU, but they have been so disenfranchised by various policies of governments of all colours that they are now disengaged from politics.

I do not know what the answer is but Project Fear is not it.

I guess the thinking is that it worked for the Scottish Referendum so why not this one?

Except there will be no 11th hour of the three stooges promising the earth, only to specify the size of the tiny portion of the earth to be delivered afterwards.

The EU believes the people of the UK will want to stay in the EU. After all why would we not. Never mind the gact that they constantly tell us we are "little Britainers" who won't integrate with the EU and won't "get with the program".

Just like all politicians, if the wrong thing works they'll keep on doing the wrong thing until it doesn't work. Then when it doesn't work they'll run around looking for someone to blame for it.

Well, you know my thoughts on that. It was not little Britainers, it was Little Englanders, Empireists, former Ministers and no-mark MPs going back to Thatcher and even before.

They did not want to play the game. If they didn't have the ball then no-one could have it. So they would sit and sulk in a corner mumbling about how unfair it was. I will despise then to my dying day for not doing the best for us within the EU.

It's the contrast though.

On the one hand they berate us for not being EU enough and on the other hand calmly assume that we'll never vote to leave because we know that we cant' survive without them.

For me that's enough to give the finger and leave and take whatever pain comes with it. That kind of relationship is of the most unhealthy kind...

I haven't a clue which way the vote will go. Like the Scottish referendum though, it won't be an end to the matter. The country is split on the EU and will remain so.

I clicked on the remain button on the poll on this article.

Go with the flow
91% Agree with you
166787 voters. Share your opinion!

Now we all know the Torygraph is pushing Brexit and that a lot of it's readers agree. But...

This is the largest majority I've seen in pretty much any Poll in the magazine, including previous Brexit polls. Also it is about the largest number of clicks I've seen ever, by about a factor of 5.

Then I played this game... I'm sure you can guess who I came out as...

Both links are total tosh.

I didn't change the result and apparently I am Margaret Thatcher. Good grief!

Well you wouldn't expect to change the result when about 150,000 have voted the other way.

I was David Cameron.... :-)

There is a large portion of truth in the article though. About 35% of the total EU citizens don't like the EU and in some countries it is over 50%. Of course don't like and leave are not the same thing. Only Germany, France and the UK could leave the EU and hope to prosper and to shrug the impact off in a few years. The rest are, simply put, scared out of their minds.
