If I am honest I never really give it a thought and this is why. We are who we are, it doesn't matter where we are from does it? Its only when filling in a form we think about it. Well I do.

on this subject, and who's to say which are right and which are wrong?

For me the only thing that matters is that people get to enter the nationality that they choose. England is a Nation, not a state, as is Scotland. Wales is more of a principality but I'd go with that as a response on a form. Personally I believe that Ireland belongs to the Irish, but on a form, if they want to be Irish, then they are, they're sure as hell not English.

If we can have forms which take German or French or Bangladeshi or any of the other 190 odd UN recognised countries then they can damned well recognise the countries which compete in the Commonwealth Games...

All those who want to be British can be British. But they can't force everyone else to be British if they don't want to, except for on the passports. Which, by the way, have European Union over the two first entries which say they are British...

Filling in these types of questionnaire is often optional, you do not have to complete them.

When they are, ostensibly, officially required a person can choose 'Other' (it has to be an option) and then expand their answer.

In many cases, and with a bit of creative form filling nobody is "forced" to declare anything.

Genealogy wise, my S has traced back to the 1700's on both sides of the family, so I think I can say with some confidence that I have no furrin blood in me, I'm pretty sure that we're 100% English stock.

I've always tended to put "English" on official forms. But I can't say I'm that bothered, TBH.

But I don't really feel any affinity to England as a nation or as a concept these days, I'm not "proud to be English" in the same way that Scots would feel proud to be Scottish. I don't actively support "Engerlund" in any national sporting events. In fact, in the 6 Nations, I have over the years tended to support Wales, even though I have no Welsh blood in me.

Actually it's a very British trait. It is what stands us apart from so many of the nations of the EU. Even in Southern Europe they are more inclined to believe their governments than we are. Well until recently with the Austerity that is...

Well it seems that you can be Welsh if the country want's you to be. Usually when you use the NHS in England and they want to balance their budget by billing someone else.
