How you describe is how I do mine Di. For the wedding I backcombed a bit so it did have a wee bit of height but not much, and then I used tongs to curl the strands I pulled down over my ears
If you've had a good look at my facebook pics of the wedding you might have noticed that Doreen had hers up, She actually went to the hotel hairdressers and they straightened then backcombed it until it stood up like a halo round her head, sprayed it until it was stiff and then pinned it up, working her fascinator into it!! It looked fab but was stiff as a board, and when she went to bed that night her head kept sticking to the pillow It took several washes to get the hairspray out - it was rock solid when she took out the pins and stayed up without them!!
I spray mine with curl mousse and dry it upside down with the diffuser. Then I spray it with curl/shine spray. I then just leave it and resist the temptation to brush it. If I do comb it I use a wide tooth comb
I don't ever take photos of me, but I do like this one and you can see the curls a bit, they soon drop out to be honest.

It looks lovely Shell!! I would love to have a bit of curl or even wave to mine, but a London hairdresser once told me my hair was the straightest he'd ever worked with. Even perms used to just drop out
I sometimes rough dry mine (ie too lazy to style with a brush so just blow the drier all over!) and it looks great for about an hour, but then it flops out and just looks as though I've not bothered with it at all.
Same here Gal! I tried drying mine upside down with the diffuser then leaving, but it just flopped! I let mine half-dry naturally if I have time, then finish with the round brush and dryer, then usually lately I spray with heat protector and straighten, just to make it look smooth and finished off with a drop of serum...... It's a heck of a palaver
