I admit Gerry hides it well, but I'm sure that's not from guilt.

And if they had given her a sleeping pill and she wandered away and was abducted, she was still abducted, so why is one scenario more likely than the other ?

I put myself in their shoes and I know Kate spoke the truth when she said if it hadn't been for the twins she would have committed suicide.

It's hard enough to lose your child but doubly so when people point the finger at you.

Just imagine if you are all wrong and the McCanns are telling the truth....wouldn't you feel totally ashamed and terrible at making their grief even worse ?

An interesting debate. I see WM has googled and found the actual site. I have holidayed in Luz many times and know the area very well. I am sitting on the fence as regards the guilt/culpability/whatever of the McCanns, but I can speak with confidence on one subject. There is no way on this earth that I, as an adult, would have wanted to be in that particular flat in that particular location with the sliding doors left unlocked. I would have felt terribly vulnerable and unsafe. With that little side entrance and the steps leading down to what was a very quiet road at night, usually quite deserted, I would have been too afraid to have left those patio doors unlocked. It is quite possible that the child could have wandered off unnoticed. There are large areas of scrubland close by.

So the VV Detective Agency has probed all the facts of this sad case available from the media. All we now want is a Hercule Poirot type perfect solution.! I do not think we shall ever know the truth unless she really was abducted, held somewhere as a captive and manages to escape one day.

Well said Rodo!

Moonie I think I would also look tortured behind the eyes, and also possibly feel suicidal, if I felt guilty for leaving my child alone and he or she had a fatal accident - which is also my theory, as I have never ever for a moment thought they'd deliberately harmed the child. Some of the 'murder' theories out there are quite ludicrous to my mind............

In fact I think for the sake of the poor little girl that is the kindest of all conclusions to draw, that she fell and hit her head, as the idea that she was taken by some monster to face a fate quite literally worse than death is too horrible for words :(

After all this time that is what most people now think. It will only come by a fluke in the investigation; or a confession by the perpetrator(s); or a slip-up by the perpetrator(s); or a break in ranks by someone who knows what happened.

We do not know how much the original investigation cost the Portuguese and British, but the current investigation by British police, funded by the taxpayer, now tops £10 million. Representatives of The Police Federation say that this cannot now be justified, yet the Home Office says it will continue to fund the operation.

The latest news is that forensic evidence from 28 burglaries carried out in 2007 in the Luz area are to be examined for clues and then compared to the evidence from the McCann apartment. Are they kidding? There was just over an hour between the discovery and local police sealing off the area. The apartment had been swamped, not least by the Tapas crowd, during that time. Things had been moved. I am saddened that all this still goes on.....

I agree with all of that - I have never thought they deliberately harmed her, I think she woke, went looking for her parents and something happened, don't know what obviously. I look at my little grandson and wonder how they ever thought it was all right to leave their children alone every night. I also think they dosed them to make them sleep. For me, although I cannot and don't want to believe that they hurt her in any way, it was their actions that lead directly to her disappearance - not an accident caused by taking their eyes off her for a minute while distracted, not a set of freak circumstances that could not be forseen, but clear and basic negligence. If Kate McCann was my daughter, I don't know if I would ever be able to truly forgive her in my heart of hearts.

We just don't know, do we? Perhaps we shall never know.

I don't feel in a position to speculate as to what really happened to
that poor little girl, and I cannot bring myself to comment on whether
her parents have told the truth or not.

Is it not perhaps better to leave one's personal thoughts unspoken?
