Last year the kelvin waves were becoming the strongest recorded, then they dropped back again. This year they are on the rise again.
2015 is breaking heat records again so I don't think that a cold winter is on the cards. Although you can never be sure.
The main product of El Nino, for us, is a slower and less active Atlantic hurricane season. However with SST's climbing the way they are, both in the Atlantic and the Pacific, who knows.
It's interesting that we are entering uncharted territory. They have records going back thousands and, in some circumstances, millions of years, however they can't clearly pinpoint what is happening today. Mainly because in ever prior reconstruction the timeline was in thousands to tens of thousands of years. Not in centuries and decades.
