What I was going to say was that this is optimistic to the point of insanity. Where is the benefit in learning any lesson. They don't even need to succeed, nobody will be dismissed for failure, consultancy companies will still be paid, why bother to put the effort into actually trying to make something that not only works but is replicable over the entire NHS????

Earlier in my career I was advised to learn SSADM. It did not strike me that the person who advised me sold services to the government. It was not until my own career in consulting and watching my daughter, the NHS accountant, having to learn SSADM, that I realised what it was.

It stands for System Software Analysis and Design. Those of us not selling services to the government just call it Sadism. Although it would be better entitled Masochism. It took me a long time to realise that SSADM is nothing more than a No Blame tool. When it all falls apart, when it costs billions and does not work, the contractor pulls out the SSADM mandatory documents with the signed off design parameters and every signed off delivery and says "It was not my fault I did exactly what you asked for". The fact that the consultancy was well aware that the people around the table who ordered the system, designed the system and signed off the documents; were not the people who actually use or maintain the system and had no real idea what it needed to do; never seems to percolate through the hide of the Civil Service brain, which is protected by so many layers of useless leather that it has a very comfortable life of ignorance and failure. Why would the consultancy ever want to tip them off? They make billions out of failure.

I have one classic example of this from my brother who worked on the London Parking Ticket Project (the one that takes you to court, fines you and sends the bailiffs round if you don't pay), in the 1980's.

He told me this one. A memo (written note on paper), was sent to the Civil Servant in control of the mainframe operations. It was quickly scribbled and sent to the CS via the internal post (no emails then). The memo said this.

We must shut down and IPL (restart), the mainframe urgently otherwise the currently running processes will crash it. If we don't shut it down now, it will take more than a day to restart it and the entire project team (numbering more than 200 people), will not be able to work.

Later that day a memo returned to the person who had sent it. Every spelling mistake and punctuation mistake was underlined and a note was written below. If you wish me to act on something you will present it correctly.

The mainframe crashed, the restart took nearly two days, the entire project team sat at their desks, read the papers, drank coffee and chatted (or flirted) with each other.

No investigation was done. Nobody was challenged. No sanctions were taken. Apparently it was perfectly normal to cost the Crown 400 man days to teach someone spelling and grammar.

As far as I can determine, very little has changed from that time. Or more projects would come in on time with the feature set that is required by the users, not the management.

I find the terms "Government IT Success" and "Passed by the Management" to be synonymous.

SSADM, well there's a thing.

This is what sent my mate to the highway. System Software Analysis and Design was there in name only. The design was done by the lead programmers based on what they wanted the software to do. Any analysis was based only on those perimeters, not against alternative methods; and the analysts, Civil Service wonks, did not have the IT skills to do any meaningful analysis, so they went with what they were told.

We, therefore, ended up with a situation where IT experts presented software to do a job they wanted it to do, and to do it their way; overseen by civil servants lacking the skills to challenge the assumptions made, so, baffled to the nth, they signed it off.

They all did their best so nobody was to blame when things went wrong.

These projects need to be opened up to as many companies as want to take part, and then for their "solutions" to be analysed by independent experts.

We have an excellent surgery, if an appointment is for 10a.m. "That is the time you are seen unless there is an emergency".
Problem as with all appointments.. Three weeks wait generally plus. If there has been a cancelation one can be informed if ones case is urgent.

We use the online prescription service which works very well.
On the very few times we want to see a doctor, I go to the surgery being first in the queue to book an appointment. Have never had a problem to get an appointment for the same day.
Last year
saw the receptionist at 8.15 a.m when it opened. Told we could see a doctor at 9.15.a.m. So it was back home to pick mrs.e and bring her back.
Went yesterday as I had the wrong bits to prick my finger and lancets so I can check my blood. The receptionist spent several minutes finding the correct items and sending the new prescription to our chemist. Will pick them up later today.
We have always had good service.

on line repeat presc here,few hiccups at chemist (farmacia) at first ,ok now

appointments? ring up or go along at 8 A.M or 1 P.M and wait

we have 2 family Dr's, one does mornings the other afternoons. if one is on holiday you could have to wait a while for appt. but obviously if you NEED to see a Dr. you will but not necessarily your own

I have been using Patient Emis access for some time and find it works well.
You can choose which doctor you want weeks ahead if it isn't urgent.
If it is urgent I log in early and watch for any cancellations that show up.
If you don`t mind which doctor you see you can usually get an appointment that day
or the day after.

It looks like we VVers are ahead of Martha's game. Many of us are already using the systems quite happily, but then we do tend to support each other and share our experiences. We can, and do, ask for help, opinions and solutions to things; and get great feedback from others who may have had similar dealings - every little helps.

Not everyone is so fortunate, especially the older ones.

Well put, Frank. I consider we are most fortunate here on Vocal Voices in having such a helpful and understanding membership, with none of the nastiness apparently common on other Social Media sites.

When I moved here 9yrs ago I went online but not being very computar savvy 8-) :lol:
I got confessed so now I ring for a prescription and also the centre chemist to arrange a delivery day itoday
For an appointment I ring in a morning ones and at dinner time for afternoon
It suits me just don't like any of the drs much
Can't move to another surgery none are taking new patients

At the surgery where I work we operate Doctor First. So the patient rings in and they get put on the GP telephone triage for the GP to ring them back. They then get invited in the same day with either a GP or a nurse or they get a prescription or just advice.

I works really well.

My surgery where I go are brilliant, I ring if I need an appointment and I get one the same day
