No, Kate, we are not at war in the way most of us would see the term.
No nation, including America, China or Russia, would take us on because we are so powerful and strong. We could do untold damage to them, as they could to us. Those, however, would be conventional and nuclear wars
Where we are weak is in our ability to take on guerilla forces such as Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Al-Shabab and IS. We do not seem to have the backbone to go in and destroy them. Today's wars are not East v West proxy wars of the Cold War, as were the cases in Korea and Vietnam, they are 'bandit' wars.
Russian, Chinese, American or Nato forces could wipe IS off the map in a day if they really wanted to. Why they do not when there are attacks in Nato countries, is a bit of a mystery.
