To put it another way, the American civil war happened because there was no mechanism for a state to leave once they had joined. At least the Lisbon treaty recognised that.

I still think that most of our politicians since WW2 have behaved in a way that has been disgraceful,
and which does not portray the British Bulldog spirit that once guided this country, and made it one
of the greatest counties in the world. We are surely in need of a leader like Churchill. The only one
who has showed any spunk since then was Mrs Thatcher.

I think it was Cromwell who the other day gave a good example to back up what you say, Aggers - Politics as a career. Many of those who want to become politicians now read PPE at Oxbridge. They then go in as an intern, administrator or researcher for an MP. If they are any good or pushy enough or they brown nose enough they get parachuted into a constituency to stand in an election, again and again, until they win one - then it's game over.

The days when a local joined the local party and then stood for election as a vocation have long gone. There are still a few, but as time goes by they become fewer and fewer till one day all MPs will come from the political class.

A very interesting but also salient point is this.

We don't trust our own politicians. The people we have direct control over with our own vote.

Yet we are being told that the politicians of the other 27 states in the EU are more trustworthy than ours. That by sticking with them we'll, somehow, have a better deal than our own bunch of shysters will give us.

I wonder what everyone would think looked at it from that viewpoint??? Because they should.
