Another police shooting in the USA

Postby cromwell » 17 Jul 2016, 17:00

I know that America is awash with guns and that the time for restricting them may have been missed, but sooner or later they will have to consider re-instating the ban on assault rifles, or at least on who is allowed to own them. Some sort of restrictions will come into play in the next few years I think, maybe on a state by state basis.

California used to have (might still have) a ban on high capacity magazines and I would expect other states to start doing the same.

I know that people get upset when people, armed and unarmed, are shot by the police. But if shooting the police becomes a regular occurence then surely the USA is on the way to anarchy?

It was always a possibility that the police would become a target of these weapons. There are plenty of Black and other ethnics who served in the Army and were trained to use a rifle. The disdain the police have shown in just "offing" black and other ethnic civilians has been a source of conflict more than once. However, after the Dallas shootings, Pandora's box has been opened and the idea has been floated.

I don't doubt that US gun laws will be revisited in the near future but I don't see that anything will be done until a line is crossed. Let's say 50 police, country wide, killed in a week.

The US police have been gung ho about using their weapons for far too long now and got away with it. Now they are in the firing line and they're not liking it one little bit.

The local mayor has said the the police were ambushed.

An incident of rapid gunfire was reported and when the police turned up they were shot.

Military trained, ambush is always the favourite if you can get away with it. For Police it's easy, they can't not respond to a crime.

This report in the Guardian shows the scale of the problem. I wonder how much it's affected the shooters.
