we have major fire above Funchal in the suburbs,it's now 3k from city centre,200 patients evac from hospital at MONTE being evac.several houses gone

200 residents evac to army barracks,tire store ,waste oil facility destroyed leading to toxic fumes

this fire only started at 4pm yesterday but of course the wind is the problem along with the heat

weather ? wind is around 70kph.

They do it over here too - not only because they "like" fire, but it's a way of getting the land cleaned Or, in a huge fire a couple of years ago, a woman wanted to burn her ex husbands house down - also burnt several hundred hectares of land

We had a huge one not too far away yesterday- and there are several big ones further up north.

Requests have already gone out for supplies to our mainly volunteer fire brigade for drinking water, snacks and socks. They need to replace their socks a lot, as they get very wet feet.

Vic these fires are incredibly scary - Cape Town has them every year and nearly every one is caused by humans; either deliberate or just sheer stupidty. I truly despair at the human race some times

Keep safe and hopefully they'll get a handle on it soon. I'm sure they'll draft the military if it starts to get out of control. That seems to be the final resort for most countries.
