I'd hang them too like Saundra says. I get a big tape measure laid out on the floor and do it there to get the finished width right.

I'd also go to a curtain shop. If you can't take the curtain with you, then take a picture of the tape (back top edge of curtain where the hooks go) and a good photo of your curtain rail including the measurement of your window and your curtain. Then they can help you work out how many hooks you need and what sort of hooks.
Everything happens for a reason

There was a time when curtain rails/runners were much the same. Then the place to hang the hooks were two little brass wheels with a metal 'sling' type thing.

Nowadays there are so many different types it has become a minefield.

Weka's ideas about photos and maybe taking a curtain along are sound advice.

Ok, well ahem how to make a right royal numpty of yourself. (Eeek, phone wanted to change numpty to nudity - thank goodness I checked )

Anyway, it obviously would help if one reads the frigging instructions. Turns out that times have moved on and what I remember from the 70's can stay there. Saundra was right (thank you! ). One simply pulls the strings to the desired width and then used said single hook to attach the curtains to the curtain rail.

Then, it doesn't help that the curtains intended for the bedroom are far to narrow so no use at all

Lesson learned - stick with what you know.

Hanging curtains ... a doddle. Right? ;)

Not according to the search engine - 2,198 pages with 20 results per page!!! :o

There are so many different types of rails, poles, runners, sliders, tapes, braids, panels, pleats or folds. Sometimes there are same names, different items, same item, different name. And the number of ways of measuring width depending on the types of pleats or folds is mind boggling.

I need a lie down, a drink, or both.

Actually, we're not supposed to call them curtains and blinds etc are we? Aren't they now referred to as window treatments?
