Organ donation (so maybe slightly ghoulish)

I am currently having the most bizarre conversation of my life, with a chap on the NHS Organ Donation page on Facebook, about which bits of me I want to leave I contacted them as my donor card is tatty, and cardboard instead of a plastic card, and is also in my old married name - despite me being a Jones for almost 12 years now. So I asked what I should do about updating, and they asked me to take the conversation to PM, and give them my details there and then so they could send me a new card.

"Gavin" has just asked me if, as I said on my old card that they could have any bits they wanted, I am happy for all major organs and tissue for donation, or if not suitable for donation, for medical research? Major organs is totally fine, but what do they mean by tissue? Not sure I want to end up in a glass jar on a shelf - "Does my bum look big in this test tube...............?"

No red tape Saundra, you just say yes
Kaz I think it means if, say, your liver wasn't suitable for donation, and they didn't want the whole thing, they could still take some liver tissue.
They need healthy tissue to compare to diseased.

They meant skin, bone and tendons etc as well, according to the chap when he got back to me, which I don't really fancy to be honest. Daft really, seeing as I won't need it

Nadine, my SIL and I have often spoken about this and we're both in full agreement that once w'ere gone we're gone and that whatever organs can be used can be taken; and yes, that includes skin for skin grafts.... then whatever isn't needed can be used for science, research, medical people in training to practice on .... whatever they want. I don't need any of my body once I'm gone and if my passing saves just one life due to organ donating or someone learning something from my tissues / organs then what more could anyone want?

Most of my family are happy to donate whatever can be used; but my mom - like many other - isn't all that keen on her eyes being used.


and dare I very very controversially say that I firmly believe in the opt-out vs opt-in system. And that if you opt out; then you shouldn't be entitled to receive either

And to add that the topic of organ donation should be raised in every family so people know of each others wishes - not an easy conversation for some, but needs must
