The post copied from another page onto Lostbox said that he'd gone missing at lunchtime so I assume that he'd wandered off on the Saturday and had been in the woods overnight? Honestly, if it was Bill missing I would've been out looking at all hours. The woods aren't huge, it's not like it's the main part of the Chase which stretches for miles and miles, and he didn't move especially quickly.

Given it's law that all dogs are chipped surely the dog warden shouldn't have released him without that being done?

as for the time gone missing and you finding him - same as you Jo; I'd be out there looking and not leaving a stone unturned. Poor dog if he was out at night Just glad he is back home now and hopefully the owners will make sure he has a collar and tag on at all times as well

In Andalucia it's illegal to own a dog that's not been micro chipped.

All dogs should be microchipped here now Ally. I think the law came into effect in April, and I know that in this area alone Dogs Trust visited on several occasions and set up in the town centre and chipped dogs for free, it was well advertised so there's no excuse really.

Billy had his boosters a few months ago and it would've taken seconds for the vet to run a scanner on him, after all I'm sure the vets could make a bit of money from chipping dogs, but he wasn't checked. And can you imagine the police carrying out spot checks when they're on the beat, if they're ever on the beat!

A check should be the first thing done whenever a dog is taken to the vets - that should be in the law. With modern technology the chip could be a mobile record of all the dog's treatments and ailments so that if one did become lost, strayed or stolen there would be no guesswork about it.

Like you, I would have been out searching Jo, and I don't think we'd have got B to sleep until she found ours! The warden will make sure Digger is microchipped I must say, they don't seem to be the most responsible of dog parents, but at least he is healthy. happy and well trained so they must be good enough. It's such a happy ending, compared to how it could have ended.

Frank, it absolutely should be the first thing any vet does when a new 'client' comes through their doors, the fact that it isn't makes a complete mockery of the whole chipping issue The page on Facebook about it is Bruce Forsyth's Vets Get Scanning, it is run by his daughter Debbie, who started it after her dogs, Gizmo and Widget, were stolen. There was a lot about it in the press at the time. She uses her dad's name as, sadly, a celeb connection does make people take notice. Her dogs were eventually returned but she's dedicated herself to the issue of chipping and scanning ever since, to help reunite people with their lost and missing dogs.

Kaz, when this came up I went looking at chip scanners and code readers - they can be had for as little as £25. OK they only detect the chip and read the reg code, but that is enough for vets, kennels, police and wardens with the right permissions to go online and read the database(s). They would not exactly break the bank with all the use they would get.
