Printer cartridges.

Postby Workingman » 07 Oct 2016, 09:01

Following on from my printer disaster I have decided to change the cartridges. I have probably refilled them so many times that they need replacing. So off I went to seee what was on offer for the full set of black, cyan, magents and yellow.........

£56.99 Btother.

£9.32 Stickyink. :D

£9.98 Printcartridgedirect. :D

Hmmmm, decision, decisions! It will not be the Brother option that's for sure.

How on earth can there be such a huge difference?

Because the manufacturers sell the printers for a loss and make it up on cartridges by a factor of about 100:1. People don't know that most of the refurbished cartridges are fairly OK and so buy genuine in the shops...

I paid 100Euro for the 4 cartridges for our printer last month. What I'm really annoyed about is that the heads were blocked and the printer (HP stand up), software is so boneheaded that it took me nearly all the cartridges to get them cleaned, only finally succeeding on Wed night after having printed 40 pages of total black then putting the heads in boiling water to clean off the accumulated gunk of the solidified ink which was stuck on the bottom of the heads.

My next purchase will be a full set for around 12 pounds.

Doing the print heads on the Brother is also a pain, you have to virtually dismantle the thing just to get to the cartridge cradle and then it is all uphill from there. Last time I did a cartridge change, about three years ago, I filled the old ones up with cleaning fluid and printed a load of pages till all was clear - I just kept using the same paper over and over.

When the thing did its diagnostics with the new cartridges, as it is wont to do, it will not allow you to use it till it has done, all was well.

I have just been looking at mono laser printers and I can buy a few different models for £10 less than Brother are asking just for cartridges. I generally only print letters so it might be an option to consider.
