It's quite interesting - we moved from Germany to South Africa a few months before I turned 2 and we lived there for just over 7 years. The move back then in 1976 seemed to catapult us from the "dark" ages into modern technology as most people in SA at that point still had very simple lives with very little modern mod cons. TV only came to SA in '76 and because we were moving we never got one - so the first for us was in Germany. Friends who lived on a farm had a party line phone - I seem to recall that we had our own dedicated lines / numbers.

Loving the replies - some I can relate to and do remember but others I have no idea what you're on about

Di, I learned to type on one of those typewriters back in 1983.... I remember us having to put on blind folds and then start typing - using all 10 fingers mind you: aaa bbb ccc ddd..... and all you'd hear is the clanking of the keyboards drowning out the voice of the typing teacher.

Vinyl to Stereo 8 to cassette to CD.... all in a few years.

And a whole new world of recording your favourite tracks and taking them mobile came into being.

A modern teen would not understand the difference it made.

They certainly wouldn't Frank.
It doesn't seem that long ago, and I suppose it wasn't, that if you wanted to listen to music while out and about you had to take a selection of CDs or cassettes along with you

Remember pressing the record button on your tape deck if you wanted to record music from the radio - and then a few seconds in the DJ / Presenter or whatever they're called, starts talking and ruins the whole thing... used to drive me totally and completely insane!

Ria, I believe that was the rule to stop us from 'stealing' the music and part of the downfall of the North Sea Pirates with their "that was, blah, blah, joke, weather, this is" format.

Ah, those were the days. Hours spent making cables to go from the earphone socket to any line-in sockets on the reel-to-reel, cassette or record player in order to do away with a microphone and all the external noise they picked up.

We were very inventive in trying to get a whole record without today's editing software. It would probably have been cheaper to go out and buy the damned records!

But not half the fun. ;) :P :P

Jo, our record player was a red and cream Dansette with a six stack. Wires were soldered to the speaker terminals as a line-out. They were then taken to the pickup head or microphone wire or socket of an Epic or maybe a Philips "portable" ( ) cassette player. Hey presto - one record, many copies!

Tapes were traded in the playground like 'stuff' is today.
