Was i being scammed for my purse?

Postby lissie » 05 Feb 2017, 09:59

I came out of Morrisons yesterday after shopping and got in my car.
I was just about to drive off when a man banged on the door and pointed
to the ground. I opened the door (that was wrong i think) to see what he
wanted thinking i must have dropped something.
With a foreign accent he showed me a £2 coin and asked me to change it
for him. I said i had`nt any change and he just shouted "open your purse"
I repeated that i had`nt any change and again he said "open your purse"
I told him to go to the kiosk in the shop and they would change it for him.
All of a sudden out of the blue he waved a £20 note at me and said "it is
yours" i said it was`nt and again he shouted "open your purse and look"
With that i put my purse on the passenger seat floor as something seemed
wrong and he wanted to get at my purse.
I started the engine and revved up and he jumped out of the way and i went
home.
Do you think he was trying to scam me as i keep thinking about it and wonder?

 That sounds very worrying, you definitely did the right thing! Perhaps next time you are there you should report it to the supermarket security team, as he might be working an organised scam  Someone might get hurt.

I think he was after your credit cards and might have taken yoiur purse by force given a chance :( With the new contactless cards they can do a fair few small transactions before the card gets cancelled.

Yes Kaz the more i think about it the more i am convinced he was after
my purse and credit cards.
I am going to Morrisons in a minute and will report it to the manager and
ask if anyone else has said anything about it happening to them.
He was 30ish, foreign and appeared to be on his own.
I should`nt have opened the door. I should have put the lock on and
just opened the window a bit. It is easy to say what to do now but i
thought i had dropped something and he was telling me

That's very worrying Lissie. It's easy to think afterwards that you shouldn't have opened the door but you don't expect something like this do you.
Maybe call the police too, on the non-emergency number (101), and just alert them as it's probably not just Morrisons where this is being tried on. It does sound like the fella was attempting to commit a crime so it should be reported really 8-)

That sounds quite scary Lissie, you did well to react as you did.
I agree about reporting it x
