It is plain common courtesy.

I know the Highway Code says that is what we have to do, it is the law, but that does not mean we should not say a little 'thank you'.

It is the inverse of queueing. There is no law to say we have to queue, but we do, and we all know how queue jumpers get treated.

It is these little things that help the world go round.

Interesting comment from Jo about horse-riders. I'd have said that in my experience, on the roads, the horse rider will acknowledge that you have slowed down or stopped for them pretty much every time.

You know who I find are the most courteous and friendly Ossie, and road users would probably say the opposite, cyclists.

Jo, out in the country; yes, in town and city centres; no way!

Then again there are cyclists and there are peeps on bikes. They are not the same.

John falls into the 'country' category I think. He cycles into work once a week between March and October and, as much as possible, uses country lanes. He just doesn't feel safe enough on the busier roads.
His latest project is to plan a route to Llantrisant which mostly uses lanes :?

The same reason I like a nod or a smile or a 'thank you' when I hold a door open or pass the salt etc..

It is a case of having good manners and being polite.... and best of all it costs nothing, not a penny. I also find that I get a lot more out of people by being polite to them, and vice versa.

Anybody who is arrogant or ignorant to me can expect a frosty response.

But the two situations are different WM. The situation whilst driving on the road is governed by the rules of the Highway Code. Holding the door open for someone is completely voluntary. Of course I would always thank someone who held a door open for me, but I don't expect to have to always wave or raise my hand because someone has held back on the road to let me go first when it was the Highway law that they should do so.

Rodo, see my other post about queueing and its rules. There are rules and laws, and there are also conventions.

Feel free to unacknowlage my good manners, even though they are the law, but do not be surprised to get the finger, a blast on the horn (illegal), the 'V' sign and a few expletives if you do.

Believe me, I can be as bad mannered as anyone when I want to be.
