The Guardian and its Brexit half truths

Postby Suff » 20 Apr 2017, 20:13

Yet again.

Oh we could just remain in the EU if the Tories lose the election... Really? No court case, just agree to stay and if the other 27 agree then it's all hunky dory again.

Except that we voted to leave. The election does not change that and any party trying to would be eviscerated at the polls and we'd have to do it all over again. Except Project Fear would be even more tenuous.

The Guardian also forgets (conveniently I'm sure), that if we don't come to a deal the ECJ has absolutely 0% jurisdiction over the UK and the rights of EU citizens in the UK.

I really hate reading the Guardian commentary on Brexit. They are the worst of them for peddling false information and false hopes. Although I'd love a few Labour party members to campaign on that platform in heavy Brexit areas.

I do not get the problem.

The Guardian is reporting, in quotes, the president of the European parliament and his meeting with May, and he is right.

There is legal argument over whether A50 can be rolled back. He is also right that the referendum was not legally binding on the UK government - thank Cameron for that cock-up. He is only on shaky ground when he says that the other 27 would welcome the UK back with open arms. I am fairly sure that some of them would be more than happy to get rid, and get rid pretty sharpish.

Tajani is speaking the full truth and if Leavers do not like it, tough *hit. Trying to spin things the other way is not working any more.

The Guardian is soft selling the "change back without legal challenge". Which is total BS. There is far more legal ground for a second referendum, should the government change and wish to go back on the will of the people, than there was for all the spurious challenges trying to block Brexit in the first place.

Following the Guardian commentary on Brexit has been quite irritating generally. Yes they report the "truth" of what people are saying then wrap it in so much surmise and spin that the end message bears little truth or reality.

Fortunately most people who read it will not be confused.

As for "the 27 will welcome the UK back with open arms", he's speaking the truth but in an EU perspective. Those with most to lose have most of the power and they will welcome the UK back with open arms. The rest will be whipped into line and gagged.

Fortunately this election will not change that result or the decision so the Guardian can just witter on. I notice that the markets response to the election was a jump in the value of the £. Because the markets know the truth. Which is that Soft Brexit is the worst of all worlds for the UK and will badly damage our economy. It is either in the EU or solidly out and they see the election result as driving solidly out. I concur, regardless of the Guardian's attempts to sway the public.

It is an interestingly sore fence the Guardian is straddling. They hate Corbyn but want to stay in the EU....

Kate Hoey said on television that Corbyn was always anti-EU and had voted alongside her on previous occasions. I don't know why this is because Corbyn is for free movement of labour. Is he against the single market - I really don't know what he thinks and he has been less vocal on this since he became leader of the Labour party.

It is the Guardian who is trying to spin things and Tajani who is being hopelessly optimistic also. The Guardian is trying to spin the election so that people who want to remain firmly believe that they can just vote in enough Labour and LD votes to "get the EU back". This is not the truth or anything like it.
