Why do people tell such whoppers?

Postby Osc » 23 Jun 2017, 13:37

This morning I was chatting to the young woman who had been renting our old house before it went on the market, and her mum who I know since my schooldays. I knew that N had not been given back her deposit, she was lucky enough that a house came up to rent in the area very quickly, but the owners of our old house turned nasty when she told them - apparently they wanted her to stay while it was on the market, but of course she would know how hard it is to find rental property around here so wasn't going to hang around.

So she took them to the Private Residential Tenancies Board, and I was astonished when I heard the lies the owners told  -unpaid bills, windows so dirty you couldn't see through them and so on. But I had one total laugh out loud moment - we left furniture behind in the house as part of the sale which we knew would not suit here. Apparently, the owners tried to claim that these were valuable family heirloom antiques.......they said the sideboard was worth €1,200.....both N and her mum cracked up when I told them that the sideboard had been in FIL's hen house and that we had cleaned it up ourselves, not in any talented restoration way, but just to make it respectable and usable   Eventually, the owners had to admit that the furniture was in the house when they bought it. I must say that the couple of times I was in the house collecting post, it looked a bit of a mess, but N's mum was telling me that three times they had groups of friends in to do a big cleaning, and get the garden into shape. The PRTB is pretty useless, and she only got half of her deposit awarded to her. But why do people tell such ridiculous lies, particularly ones that can be proven as such.....oh wait, look at Donald Trump

   Mr Osc and yourself ought to start a furniture restoration business!

Over here, you are supposed to declare what you're leaving behind on the legal forms when you move house. Is it a similar system in Ireland, Osc?

I know somebody who was having trouble getting his deposit back so he went in using his spare keys while it was *To Let* and changed the locks.

Osc, my son's boss is worse - she's an out and out fantasist! I'll have to start a thread on the families board about all the stuff that has gone on.

Those tenants sound a right bunch of chancers! Luckily most people are still honest.

It's not the tenants who were chancers, Cromwell, but the owners!
