Time to think the unthinkable ....

Postby TheOstrich » 08 Nov 2017, 20:43

In the light of the Tory government's absolutely woeful performance in just about every area, should we not oust the lot of them, call fresh elections, and install Jeremy Corbyn in No.10?

Could it be any worse a farce than it is now?

I am not sure that we live in a country where we "oust" governments, but I take your point, Ossie.

Elections, now there is a different matter. If we could somehow get a National Government or a coalition of all the parties at this time it might not be a bad thing. I am not talking about a LibLab pact or a ConLib coalition, but more of a unity government.

Unfortunately we are where we are and there is one huge issue guaranteeing that no such thing could happen, which is of course Brexit. The instability in the Tory party threatens to make that more of a disaster than a success. With the resignation of Patel, May is in a tough place. She has to promote another unknown, or do a mini reshuffle, and there are calls from her own side to sack BoJo for his handling of the Iran prison sentence handed down to a dual national. If she does he will be a thorn from the back benches, if she does nothing she will look weak and powerless.

What a mess!

Personally I would back a military coup, wet old liberal that I am.
I think we should remember that the TV news on general hates the Tory party and gleefully seizes on any opportunity to slag them off.
Example? Boris Johnson and the lady imprisoned in Iran.
Slagging off of Johnson 1000%.
Mention of the awful biased sentencing by the Iranian authorities?
0%.
The liberal news media have an agenda and they are sticking to it.

He hasn't changed 0.00001% from where he was a year ago. The Blairites still want to stab him to death in a dark alley and Momentum still want to turn the party into a hard left government.

Could it be any worse?

Lots.

I'd rather play with fulminate of Mercury.

He's the Foreign Secretary, FCOL, he should get his facts right before gobbing off. He is supposed to help British nationals imprisoned abroad not make their situations worse. His latest gaff could break up a family and put the future of an innocent child in jeopardy.

How he remains in the Cabinet is a complete mystery... unless he has info on the others. Hmm

It is called popularity, a disease most of the politicians don't suffer from.

It may not be a farce but imo yes, it could be a lot worse.
Voting age dropped to 16.
Back into the EU but now with no rebate.
Open door immigration again.
More firearms banned.
More everything banned.
More hate speech legislation.
State control of the press.
Tax increases.

Yes, it would get worse.

Here's a thing. There has been a lot of fulminating about what Johnson said - but what did he actually say?
a) "It's a fair cop guv, she shouldn't have had that semtex in her handbag".
b) "Well, you spy on us".
or c) "She was merely teaching journalists"

Yes, it was c. Which is not imo a resigning issue. (The lady was on holiday we are told.)

As Suff points out, Johnson is popular. Which is very unpopular with the tv people. So he gets a constant trashing.

Consider this. If Boris Johnson had said the terror attacks were "part and parcel of living in a big city", what would the BBC's reaction have been? They didn't say anthing when Sadiq Khan said it, but I would bet against a similar trappist silence if Johnson had said it.

If Boris Johnson had been caught on video boasting about having unprotected sex with male prostitutes and offering to buy them class A drugs, what would the BBC have had to say? It's been a year since Keith Vaz was caught doing this. The parliamentary investigation still hasn't finished one year later! Would the BBC or Sky be so silent if it had been Johnson caught with his trousers down? Like hell.

If he had been caught advertising himself in crude language on a dating website like Chris Bryant, would Sky and the BBC have defended him? No.

The BBC have an agenda. They are pushing it.

And their main weapon is outrage - even if it is very selective outrage.

OK, I'll allow you the BoJo thing.

I think that he is as much of an arse as Vaz and that probably skews my views about him.

I also agree about the media agendas, especially the BBC's. I only use it to point me to other news stories as its reporting reads like Take a Break or the Beano.

Boris may act the clown, but he is not actually a fool. Which was well understood as London boomed under his Mayorship. Way more than under LivingScum.

People like Vaz and Khan are damned dangerous. Boris is just a bit off the wall but under it he's a fairly normal guy.

As for the press? I'm actually becoming amused by them. They are so determined to drive the UK onto the rocks for their own personal agenda's that they are driving interest rates up without the benefit of driving the £ back up much. Pretty soon Carney is going to be tearing his hair out as a short term impact of upping rates is to cause a short term inflation bubble. Add that to the inflation bubble of low rates for the £ and it will undo everything Carney is trying to do. Thus forcing millions of Remainers to pay more for their mortgages....

Classic! I love it. Nothing could guarantee the UK interest rates heading for 1%, more than what the press are doing today over Brexit.

About time too. Interesting that the very people who forced the BOE to drop rates are going to be the very instrument in rates doubling from where they started in 2016.
